Description

The Big Five series honours the five animals long regarded as Africa’s most challenging to hunt on foot: the elephant, lion, black rhino, leopard and buffalo. The South African Mint launched the modern series in 2019, following the earlier Natura coins.

This coin is from Series II and features the buffalo. The obverse shows a full portrait of the animal, while the reverse carries a split profile that lines up into a close portrait when several coins are placed side by side. It is struck in one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and is legal tender at 5 Rand.

With limited mintages and a strong local following, the Big Five coins sit between everyday bullion and collector pieces, from the same mint that makes the Krugerrand.
