Big 5 Series 3: Honouring Africa’s Iconic Megafauna

Immerse yourself in the wild spirit of the African continent with the Big 5 Series 3 coin collection. Struck by the South African Mint, this acclaimed multi-year series pays homage to Africa’s majestic and formidable wildlife: the Elephant, Lion, Rhinoceros, Leopard, and Buffalo. Building on the massive success of previous editions, Series III brings fresh artistic perspectives and intricate portraiture to these world-renowned animals.

The Big 5 series is celebrated globally for its innovative dual-portrait design. While the obverse highlights a detailed close-up of the featured animal, the reverse displays two halves of the animal’s face side-by-side. When two or more coins are placed next to each other, a complete seamless portrait—and ultimately a full herd or pride—is formed.
