South African Silver Krugerrand

The Silver Krugerrand is a Rand hedge that provides a diversified South African portfolio some protection against Rand weakness. Historically, when the South African rand weakens, the price of silver increases.

History of the Silver Krugerrand

The Silver Krugerrand was first introduced in 2017 to mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic gold coin, originally launched in 1967. That year, two versions were released: a proof edition and a premium uncirculated (PU) edition.

The Mint initially planned a mintage of one million PU coins but ultimately produced 800,000 worldwide. Proof coins were capped at just 15,000 pieces, each presented in a special box with a numbered certificate of authenticity (COA). By contrast, the PU coins were distributed in leather pouches.

Thanks to their limited numbers, premium finishes, and the historical significance of the 50th anniversary, the 2017 Silver Krugerrand Proof and PU editions remain highly sought-after by collectors today.

The Bullion Silver Krugerrand

The bullion silver Krugerrand, in the Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, made its debut in 2018. This was a one troy ounce, fine silver bullion coin with 99.9% purity. The bullion coin was more cost-effective to produce and had unlimited mintage, which made it more affordable for South African investors to add physical silver bullion to their investment portfolios.

Why Invest in the South African Silver Krugerrand?

The gold Krugerrand was the world’s first bullion coin, giving investors an easy way to own physical gold and quickly becoming one of the most popular investment coins globally. Building on this heritage, the silver edition has gained strong demand among both South African and international investors.

Because it is widely recognised and backed by the Krugerrand brand, the coin is highly liquid and simple to trade worldwide. With the Rand Refinery applying only a minimal premium over the silver spot price, it remains one of the most cost-effective legal tender bullion options available locally. Minted by the South African Mint, each coin carries a government guarantee of purity and authenticity.

Rand Hedge

Silver is a Rand hedge that provides a diversified South African portfolio some protection against Rand weakness. Historically, when the South African rand weakens, the price of silver increases.

Affordable Entry

Silver has a more affordable entry point when compared to gold, which makes it more accessible for smaller investors. Silver offers many of the benefits of an investment in gold at a much lower entry point.

Industrial Demand

Silver is a key component in green technologies like electric vehicles and solar panels. The increasing industrial demand, resulting from a diminishing supply of support, will inevitably lead to much higher prices in the future.

Intrinsic Value

Silver is not a paper asset; it can’t be printed or defaulted on. Silver bullion offers a form of real wealth that can help preserve purchasing power and provide protection against inflation, currency devaluation, and systemic financial risks.

Investing in Silver Krugerrands: Common Questions

Investing in silver can feel complex, especially if you’re just starting out. The Silver Krugerrand is one of the most recognised and trusted bullion coins in South Africa, and at African Bullion we believe informed investors make the best decisions. That’s why we’ve put together clear answers to the questions we’re asked most often — from what makes the Silver Krugerrand unique, to how VAT works, and where to buy or sell with confidence. Use this guide to better understand why the Silver Krugerrand remains such a popular choice for South African investors.

The Silver Krugerrand is South Africa’s official silver bullion coin, first issued in 2017 by the South African Mint and Rand Refinery. Each coin contains 1 troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver and features the same iconic design as the gold Krugerrand — Paul Kruger on one side and the Springbok antelope on the other. Recognised worldwide, it is a legal-tender coin that’s easy to trade, highly liquid, and trusted by investors. Affordable compared to gold, the Silver Krugerrand offers a practical way to own physical silver, protect wealth against inflation, and diversify an investment portfolio.

The Silver Krugerrand is produced in two main versions: bullion and proof. While both contain 1 oz of 99.9% pure silver, they serve different purposes.

Bullion Silver Krugerrands are designed primarily for investors. They are mass-produced, carry a brilliant but standard finish, and are sold close to the silver spot price with a small premium. Their key advantage is affordability and liquidity — they are easy to buy and sell in the global bullion market.
Proof Silver Krugerrands, on the other hand, are collector’s coins. Each coin is struck multiple times with specially polished dies to create a mirror-like background and frosted relief. They come in presentation packaging with a numbered certificate of authenticity. Proof coins are produced in limited quantities, making them rarer and more valuable to numismatists. However, they usually carry a much higher premium above the silver price and are less suited for bulk investment.

In short: bullion coins are for investment, proof coins are for collecting. Both are authentic Krugerrands, but your choice depends on whether you value liquid investment or numismatic rarity.

The Silver Krugerrand has become a favourite among South African investors because it combines affordability, recognition, and trust.

Lower entry point: Silver is far more affordable than gold, making it accessible to first-time investors who want to start building a portfolio of precious metals.
Global recognition: Backed by the South African Mint and Rand Refinery, the Silver Krugerrand carries the same heritage as the gold Krugerrand — one of the world’s most traded coins. This reputation gives investors confidence and ensures strong resale demand.
Hedge against uncertainty: Silver, like gold, protects wealth against inflation, currency weakness, and market volatility — issues South African investors know well.
Liquidity: Because the coin is widely recognised both locally and internationally, it’s easy to buy and sell at market-related prices.
Diversification: Holding silver alongside gold balances a portfolio, offering exposure to two key precious metals.

For many South Africans, the Silver Krugerrand is the gateway to precious metals investing — trusted, liquid, and backed by a brand with over 50 years of credibility.

Investors can buy or sell Silver Krugerrands through accredited bullion dealers such as African Bullion, which is an authorised dealer with the Rand Refinery. Other options include banks, the South African Mint, and the secondary market. While private sales are possible, they require careful checks for authenticity and fair value. Working with an accredited dealer offers the most secure and transparent route, ensuring that Silver Krugerrands are genuine and priced in line with the global silver spot market.

Yes. Unlike gold, silver bullion coins such as the Silver Krugerrand are subject to VAT in South Africa. This adds to the upfront purchase price, but it is not a permanent loss. When investors sell their coins back to a VAT-registered dealer, they complete a VAT resale declaration form, allowing the dealer to reclaim the VAT. This is reflected in the buy-back price, so investors recover the VAT portion. In effect, VAT is a cash-flow issue, not a long-term cost, provided the coins are traded through accredited bullion dealers.
